THE MID-CLYDE ANGLING ASSOCIATION

The Association controls 8 miles of prime double-bank Salmon and Sea Trout fishing on the River Clyde between Hamilton in South Lanarkshire and Rutherglen in Glasgow. Due to the location of the Associations waters, many a fresh fish, straight off the tide, has been caught.

Sea Trout start entering the system in March with the main runs beginning late May/early June. Salmon/grilse have been caught in February but the main runs usually begin in June with large numbers of fish running the system in August/September when river levels are suitable.

The Mid Clyde Angling Association have adopted to follow the lead of Stirling District Council and are introducing a tagging system in the interest of salmon conservation.

  • Members will be issued with 5 tags bearing association name and a unique serial number. Any salmon killed must be tagged immediately by fixing tag through gill vent and mouth of fish. Anyone found with a dead fish and no tag attached will have deemed to have broken the Association Rules therefore debarring them as members and rendering them liable to prosecution for having taken a fish without legal right or written permission.( poaching ).

  • If a member is lucky enough to use all his tags he has the option of fishing catch and release for the remainder of the season or purchasing a supplementary permit for £25.00p + 5 tags which will entitle them to take a further 5 fish.

  • The AGM voted to increase the price of adult membership to £50.00p with all other permit prices remaining the same as 2007 season. We will also be selling Brown trout permits at £10.00p for adults and £5,00p for juveniles and seniors. Day tickets will be available at the cost of £2.00p. trout permits will be available through various outlets which will soon be posted to you.

  • The association also agreed to set up a Course Angling Section and hope to run various competitions throughout the year. Anyone interested should contact either myself or John Clark 0141 633 1255.

Good news for salmon fly anglers restrictions at Blantyre Weir have been relaxed and anglers will now be allowed to commence fishing for salmon from the upstream side of the concrete feet of the bridge. Provided that they are fishing across or downstream from this point, anyone found to be casting upstream will be deemed to have broken association rules and thereby forfeiting their membership making them liable to prosecution.

  • M.C.A.A. have appointed a hatchery manager and assistant manager who will train with the Nethan Valley Angling Association hatchery.

  • It was reported that certain individuals are hogging prime fishing spots. The rules clearly state that members must make a cast and then move downstream 1 step. Every member is entitled to the same privileges and anyone found abusing the rule will be brought before the association committee.

The Association stock annually, with over 1,000 brown trout, and it is not unusual to hook a 3lb+ brownie throughout the Associations water. In 1998 one member had a total of 47 grilse/salmon for his season, most of which he returned. Any legal method of fishing for salmon is allowed, with both spinners and flies accounting for their fare share of fish.

The picture on the right shows a 25lb salmon caught during the last week of the 2003 season. The happy angler is George Dempster from Dalkeith, Mid-Lothian. George caught his fish using a worm and barely managed to get the fish into the net when his 10lb line snapped!

This is the biggest fish recorded for the 2003 season on the Mid Clyde Angling Association's section of the River Clyde.

Permit prices are exceptionally cheap considering that every salmon and sea trout that runs up the Clyde must pass through this section of river first. An Adult Membership costs £35.00 per year and a Juvenile/Senior Citizen £15.00 per year. Day Ticket £5.00 until the last day of June, then £10.00 from July to October.

Tom Moody's (Wishaw) sea trout : 28.5 inches  13lbs and caught
on an intermediate tip line with a size 10 Cascade.

Tony Madden caught 18 salmon/grilse and 19 sea trout for his season, and it appears that from returns so far that the Clyde has had a very good run of fish this year. This was predicted in the conservation model which was designed by the N.V.A.A.a few years ago.

MCAA will be holding fly tying classes at start of new year.
