History of Nethan-Valley

THE NETHAN VALLEY ANGLING ASSOCIATION was formed in the year 2000 in an attempt to save the Wild Brown Trout population in the River Nethan, a tributary of the famous River Clyde in Scotland.

The River Nethan was historically a Salmon river and was one of the main spawning tributaries of the River Clyde. A Chronology of the River Clyde tells the story of this great river from the 12th Century to the present day. This was the uppermost major tributary that Salmon could access but with the advance of the Industrial Revolution in the Glasgow area, causing heavy pollution of the River Clyde, these migratory fish were prevented from ascending the system. Having no competition from these migratory fish, the Brown Trout numbers increased. Various factors have caused the Brown Trout population to decline rapidly, some of these being Ulcerated Dermal Necrosis, poorly designed road culverts, agricultural pollution, and redd wash out. Since the 1980's Salmon numbers are beginning to recover in the River Clyde and her tributaries, thanks to an improvement in the quality of the water within the system. It is hoped that we can reverse the downward trend in the Brown Trout numbers.

Follow our progress from our infancy, to our approach towards improving the River Nethan and fish stocks. Volunteers carry out all projects, with membership open to anyone, no matter where in the world they live.

Association meetings are held on the third Monday of every month at 7.30pm in the Blackwood Village Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. We are looking for as much input as possible.

A poem was handed in by one of our older members. It was composed by James Perrie, who lived in the cottage where our Hatchery now stands, between 100 to 150 years ago . We find it fitting to be added to our web page as it is part of Nethan-Valley's history and in respect to James Perrie, formally of Divity, Lesmahagow. Click Poem to read and enjoy.

FRIENDS OF THE NETHAN
Due to the amount of interest shown by non-anglers, the Association has launched a new type of Membership. This new form of Membership is for those who do not fish but support the work the Association carries out improving the environment. 'Friends of the Nethan' will receive a Membership Card and a Quarterly Report covering all environmental issues relating to the River Nethan Catchment; such as the results of survey work relating to fish populations, otter sightings, aquatic invertebrate densities. Anyone of any age can join and are more than welcome to come along and visit our Hatchery/Research Unit, or come out on the river to watch us carrying out the various surveys.

The cost of a 'Friends' Membership is only £5.00 for adults and £2.00 for those over 60 or under 16 on the 15th of March.
