THANKS
The N.V.A.A. are grateful for the help and support that the
"Lanark and Carluke Gazette" have shown to us once again. This is the second
time they have come to our rescue in less
than a year. Many thanks to Ross,
Craig, Lindsay and the
rest of the staff at the Gazette for achieving in
less than a
week something we could not in 2 months of wrangling and being
fobbed off with excuses from the Roads Department.

LATEST ON POLLUTION -
The Logan Water is now fairly clean after the disaster in May, however
Scottish Water want to leave the section that was devastated to repair
itself and they want to monitor it over the next 5 years. Many will say that
is the way it should be done while others like the N.V.A.A. want to see that
section of river back to what it was much quicker than 5 years. Sea trout
are already running the Logan and what of the Brownies that spawn in it this
year? Where is the food for their offspring going to come from? Not only the
fish will suffer if the section is allowed to regenerate naturally Wagtails,
Dippers, Oyster Catchers and otters will suffer to name but a few species.
Had this been a natural disaster then nature should be allowed to take its
course, but this was caused by ignorance and folly and should be rectified
A.S.A.P. It is our intention to get the Logan Water back to a pristine
spawning burn within 1 year so no doubt we will upset a few people along the
way. If it means that wildlife has a better chance then so be it. We need as
much support from the public as we can get on this.
It is through the
perseverance of our dedicated River Management team that the work is being
done and this from an association with no migratory fish interests on the
river other than their species continued recovery and greater spread
throughout the catchment. We received very little if any assistance from
anyone on this matter and hope that credit is directed at those who
campaigned for the past few years to get the problem for fish at the gauging
station addressed.
The River Management Team even constructed working models of the gauging
station to scale and critically tested each design until they came up with a
cheap and easy solution to the problem. DVD's were produced of the models
and each part of the test, these were then sent to the Crown Estates Office,
Scottish Executive, SEPA and various angling clubs. We received no feed back
from the Crown Estates! and it is in their interest that the migratory fish
are allowed easy passage upstream as they have claimed most of the Migratory
fish rights on the Clyde Catchment.
Copies of the DVD and relevant trails are available to anyone with similar
problems we have also a DVD of a pool and traverse type of fish pass we
designed for another location on the River Nethan. DVD's can be obtained by
contacting fisheryinformation@nethan-valley.co.uk they are free of charge
but small donations would be welcome.
STOP PRESS

We have had 7 years of hard work wiped out in a few hours by an irresponsible water authority and for that they will be brought to boot compensation claims will be submitted but how can you put a price on all the voluntary work carried out by the hatchery and river management team? Have we had an apology yet the answer is no.
